WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 28, 2017) – Mazda North American Operations filed a Part 573 with NHTSA regarding a safety concern with certain Model Year 2017 CX-5 Vehicles. On 2017 MY CX-5 vehicles with a genuine Mazda accessory trailer hitch harness installed, due to inappropriate routing of the harness, there may be insufficient clearance between the harness and main exhaust silencer. If the exhaust silencer makes contact with the harness while driving, harness damage may eventually occur causing the harness wires to become short-circuited.

If connecting a trailer harness to the vehicle in this condition, the trailer’s tail lamps and/or turn signals will become inoperative. Therefore, other drivers may not be able to see the driver’s intention to slow down, turn, or change lanes. The lighting and indicator equipment on the vehicle itself are not affected by this condition.

Approximately 1,076 vehicles are affected.

There have been no injuries reported.
