News Releases
WASHINGTON, DC. (Sept. 19, 2024) – Mazda North American Operations (MNAO), on behalf of Mazda Motor Corporation, has filed a safety noncompliance defect notification with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a concern which exists on certain 2016-2023MY MX-5 Miata vehicles.
During a minor crash or collision, a higher force air bag deployment may improperly occur instead of the expected lower force air bag deployment. The SAS (air bag) control module software does not meet the required FMVSS 208 for Occupant Crash Protection specifications. If occupants do not use a seatbelt, this may increase the risk of air bag induced injuries.
There have been no reports of any accidents or injuries due to the defect.
Approximately 77,670 2016-2023MY MX-5 Miata vehicles are affected in the U.S. and U.S. Territories.
Affected owners will be notified by U.S. Mail.
